JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {SHOW #4 RECONSTRUCTION
FINE EDIT} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie
Gleason. This reconstruction of the original episode
was assembled by The Museum of Television & Radio
from various kinescopes and videotape elements. (A list
of segments not included on this tape immediately
follows this summary.) The program begins with
Gleason's opening monologue, in which he recognizes
orchestra leader Ray Bloch and his twentieth anniversary
as a conductor; during the monologue, announcer Paul
Luther introduces radio and television writer John
Lester, who dubs Gleason the "number one television
comedian" of the season. Luther introduces Doretta
Morrow who sings "I Have Dreamed" (a song from "The
King & I") and "Because You're Mine" from the Mario
Lanza picture she's currently appearing in. In "The
Honeymooners" sketch, Ralph comes home with a baby he
found on the bus; while Alice goes to get the baby
something to eat, Norton and Ralph attempt to feed him
some milk without much success. Next, Luther
introduces violinist Maria Neglia who performs "Flight
of the Bumblebee," assisted by the bumblebee-costumed
June Taylor Dancers. After a brief interruption for
station identification, Gleason returns as Joe the
Bartender, who gives an update on the goings on at the
local pub; he tells stories about Tin Horn, who's always
angling for free drinks, Fatso Fogerty's English cousin
Gaylord, Alderman Paddy's parrot, and Rinty and Muriel's
breakup (Gleason sings "It's Over, How About Me?").
Next, Gleason introduces Nat "King" Cole: Cole plays
piano and sings "Walkin' My Baby Back Home," backed by a
conga drummer, guitar, bass, and a horn section that is
heard but not seen; he then sings "Faith Can Move
Mountains" (an unseen string section and a chorus
provide accompaniment). Gleason closes the program
with an acknowledgment of the Red Feather group, who
work for the community chest. No end credits. Includes
commercials.
(Segments not included: opening title; opening number
featuring the June Taylor Dancers; American Chickle Co.
Clorets Mints and Gum commercial; an interlude
featuring Paul Luther; Pacquin's Silk 'n' Satin Lotion
commercial.)
