MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF NICKELODEON: WE GOT GAME: THE STORY OF NICKELODEON'S GAME SHOWS {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. This seminar, held in New York and moderated by television curator David Bushman, is part of the Museum's celebration of Nickelodeon's twentieth anniversary. The seminar includes a panel discussion about the history and the production of Nickelodeon's game shows, followed by a live re-creation of one of the games, with help from audience members. After introducing the seminar, Bushman presents a clip reel featuring excerpts of the following Nickelodeon game shows: "Make the Grade" (1990); "Finders Keepers" (1988); "Legends of the Hidden Temple" (1995); "What Would You Do?" (1991); "You're On!" (1998); "Think Fast" (1990); "Nick Arcade" (1992); "Total Panic" (1990); "Get the Picture" (1991) "Wild and Crazy Kids" (1991); "Figure It Out" (1999); and "Global Guts." Next, Bushman introduces members of the creative team from Nickelodeon game shows -- Marc Summers, Magda Lionis, and Margie Cohen. Panelists discuss the following subjects, among others: game shows and other original programs that were developed when Nickelodeon updated its image, extensive research and testing before a game show is aired, and the way show ideas are conceived and developed. Bushman presents a second clip reel, which illustrates the development of several programs from the pilot to the full-blown series -- including excerpts from "Get the Picture," "Nick Arcade," "Guts," "Legends of the Hidden Temple," and "Figure It Out." Panelists then talk about a game show's preproduction and the casting of hosts. Next is a clip of Summers's 1985 audition tape for "Double Dare"; Summers then talks about his career background and the steps he took to pursue his dream of being a game show host. Another clip reel offers a behind-the-scenes look at the taping of such programs as "Double Dare" and "Global Guts." Panelists then explain technical work on the set. Topics discussed include the taping schedule, studios they have worked in, and mishaps during a "live taping." Bushman then opens the discussion to audience questions, leading to the following comments: reasons why some Nickelodeon game shows have failed, the age range of children on the programs, and contestant searches. Finally, Summers hosts a game on stage in which random audience members use contraption called a "swinglestick." Summers leads a team of two teenagers, and then a team of two adults.
