ABC PREMIERE EVENT: DOUBLE PLATINUM (TV)
Summary
This made-for-television movie concerns the reunion and artistic synergy that take place between a music celebrity and her young daughter, whom she left behind in order to pursue her singing career. At the beginning of the movie, Olivia is shown performing at a local rhythm and blues club. Olivia sings her heart out, and right after the performance she goes to check on her infant daughter, Kayla, who is being kept backstage. After that night's particularly strong performance, a music producer urges Olivia to audition for a job in New York. Olivia tries to discuss her career development with her husband, Adam, but he insists that she focus on being a wife and mother, and that she restrict her singing to the church and local venues. Olivia passes a sleepless night deliberating. She then decides to pursue her dreams in New York, and makes plans to leave her daughter at home with her husband temporarily. However, as time passes, Olivia King becomes a musical star, and Kayla becomes a young woman in St. Louis, never knowing her mother's identity. One day, Kayla enters a radio station contest and wins a ticket to an Olivia King concert, followed by dinner with the diva herself. Olivia King has orchestrated the record contest in order to finally meet her daughter and become involved in her life. At first, Kayla is ecstatic over her meeting with the great artist, particularly when Olivia encourages her to follow her own aspirations as a singer. But when Olivia confesses to Kayla that she is her mother, Kayla is filled with anger toward Olivia for abandoning her, and anger toward Adam for lying to her for so long. However, mother and daughter decide that Kayla will go to New York so that Olivia can help her establish a singing career, and they agree to keep their relationship a secret.
In New York, Kayla impresses Olivia's manager and producer, and she quickly becomes wrapped up in a whirlwind of rehearsals, recording sessions, and photo shoots. Olivia tries to help her daughter steer her career in the right direction, but Kayla is resentful of Olivia's meddling. Moreover, Kayla has begun dating a slick stylist named Ric who has his own ideas about helping Kayla achieve superstardom. While Olivia keeps trying to form a bond with her daughter, Kayla makes it clear that it is too late for them to have a relationship, and that she wants to strike out on her own. Soon Kayla moves into her own place, and arranges her career directly with the record company, as her debut single moves to the top of the music charts. When the front pages of the tabloids blaze with the news of the biological relationship between the two chart-topping singers, Kayla and Olivia are horrified. Olivia is certain that Ric has leaked the news, and she flees to her country cabin to escape the media. Kayla soon follows her mother to the cabin when she sees the ugly side of the music business up close. Without the distraction of their careers, Olivia and Kayla are able to finally confront each other and discuss their feelings about the events of the past eighteen years. The two reach a truce, and they are able to return to the music business, secure in both their relationship with each other and in their individual talents as musical artists. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
