TWO OF A KIND: KEVIN BURKE'S DAY OFF {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Kevin Burke, a Chicago-based single father trying to raise twin eleven-year-old daughters, tomboyish Mary-Kate and the status-conscious Ashley. In this episode, the series finale, Ashley practices to make the cheerleading squad, though Mary-Kate wonders why her sister would want to hang out with such stuck-up girls. Meanwhile, Kevin is upset to learn that Carrie is cutting his class to take a "mental health day." During her day off, Carrie finds a Mr. Winky burger statue at a flea market and brings it back to the house. When Kevin makes fun of her found treasure, Carrie wonders what Kevin would do on a day off. Kevin claims to never take a day off. Later, Mary-Kate befriends Gabrielle, a new goth student. However, the association embarrasses Ashley, as she's worried about what the popular cheerleaders already on the squad will think. Ashley asks Mary-Kate to not be friends with Gabrielle because it's hurting her chances of joining the team. The next day, Carrie shows Kevin some opening day Cubs tickets she has and tries to get him to take the day off with her. Kevin finally agrees to call in sick to the dean. That day at school, Mary-Kate imitates Gabrielle's goth fashions to protest Ashley's suggestion to dump her new pal, further embarrassing Ashley. The cheerleaders give Ashley one shot at making the team: She must pull a dirty prank on Gabrielle. Meanwhile, at the Cubs game, Kevin wins an opening day giveaway prize, a car, thus putting his face on the jumbotron for every fan in attendance to see. Back at school, Ashley pulls off the prank -- spray-painting Gabrielle's new backpack -- which brings Gabrielle to tears. Ashley admits she pulled the prank, apologizes to Gabrielle, and decides she doesn't want to be a cheerleader anymore. Having won the car, Kevin is paranoid that everyone in Chicago knows he skipped work. Sure enough, the television news coverage of his good fortune has turned him into a local hero. Finally, the dean calls Kevin -- to ask if he can test-drive the new car, as he's thinking of buying one just like it. Includes commercials.
