CHARLIE ROSE {MARTIN SCORSESE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of talk shows hosted by Charlie Rose. In this program, Rose interviews motion-picture director Martin Scorsese, who begins by talking about his current project, an adaptation of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel, "The Age of Innocence." Scorsese points out the film's similarities to his other movies, which at first might seem quite different. The director attributes his interest in the project to his fascination with tribal and cultural instincts and rules of conduct, his attention to detail and authenticity, and the challenge of interpreting the suppressed emotions of high society in the 1870s through images on film. After showing a clip from the movie, Scorsese discusses his reasons for casting Daniel Day Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer in the leading roles, and he examines the non-physical forms of violence used in the movie. He then focuses on the genre of music videos and looks at the unique role of editing in the filmmaking process. Recalling the important role his parents have played in his career, Scorsese explains why he often gives them small roles in his movies; he and Rose view an interview with the senior Scorseses on "American Masters." Their son then discusses the significance of his film "Mean Streets" as a reflection of his growing up in a very provincial neighborhood in New York City. Following a sequence from "Taxi Driver," he investigates the reasons for his very successful collaboration with Robert De Niro on a number of projects, including "Raging Bull" and "Cape Fear." Scorsese ends the interview with a brief description of his next project and shares a few of his ideas for his future work.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by Rosalind P. Walter, 1999.
