BIOGRAPHY: SIGMUND FREUD: ANALYSIS OF A MIND (TV)

Summary

One in this series of documentaries which examines the professional and personal lives of a wide range of individuals, both those in the public eye and those of historic note. This documentary, hosted by Jack Perkins, utilizes rare still photographs; archival footage; and interviews with family, friends, collaborators, and historians to examine the life and career of psychotherapy pioneer Sigmund Freud. After a brief introduction by Perkins, Freud's alternately traumatic and cheerful childhood is discussed by psychiatrist/historian Joe Aguayo and Harold P. Blum, the director of the Sigmund Freud archives. The most interesting aspect of Freud's youth, according to Blum, is the significant fact that Freud kept a journal of his dreams even as a young boy. Aguayo discusses Freud's intense ambition, which took on a decidedly combative edge in the face of Vienna's anti-Semitism. Judith M. Hughes, author of "From Freud's Consulting Room," discusses the irony in the sexually repressed Freud's research into the role of sexual repression and abuse in patients' neuroses and his conclusion that this repression was the primary catalyst for hysteria and dementia. Morton Hunt, author of "The Story of Psychology," talks about Freud's infamous cocaine research and the disastrous effect of the drug on a number of his colleagues and friends. The lengthy middle portion of the program is devoted to Freud's major life achievement, his discovery of the unconscious mind. His various treatments -- talk therapy, dream analysis, free association -- are explained and explored briefly. The last third of the episode discusses Freud's troubles later in life, including his feud with Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, his cancer, and his crippling loneliness. Finally, granddaughter Sophie Freud discusses Freud's unusual relationship with his daughter Anna. Commercials deleted.
