MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN {EPISODE 287} {TOM IS RELEASED FROM JAIL} (TV)
Summary
The first of two episodes on this tape. One in this satirical soap opera series about Mary Hartman, a housewife from Fernwood, Ohio. In this episode, Wanda saves the day by revealing that she was with Dewey on the night he died. She vows that he was already dead before his cabin caught on fire, thus clearing Tom of the murder charge. Wanda's admission means that she must confess to her long-term affair with Dewey, which is recorded in her diary. Tom then gets the courage to explain that Vern and Texas set the fire. In the commotion, Texas admits that they were behind the explosion at the auto plant. He tries to escape by threatening to destroy the jail with a grenade, but he only succeeds in blowing up Vern and himself. Tom returns home, but instead of renewing his romance with Mary, he goes to the Capri lounge to celebrate with his pals. Dennis stops by the Hartmans' house just when Mary is feeling particularly vulnerable and lonely, and George and Charlie worry when Tom celebrates his victory with alcohol. Merle and Wanda hurl accusations at each other concerning their indiscretions, but their fight turns into a bonding session when they burn Wanda's newly-discovered diary. Commercials deleted.
