FREAKS AND GEEKS: I'M WITH THE BAND (TV)
Summary
One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. In this episode, Nick's father gives his son an ultimatum: if Nick can't keep a C-plus average, his father will take away the drum kit he uses to cover Cream and Rush tunes with his bandmates. Nick immediately realizes the implications of this deal; his father wants to see his son enter the Army, rather than chase the dream of being a rock 'n' roll drummer. Nick is a mess over the situation, and his stress translates into tension between him and his bandmates. Meanwhile, Sam's life is thrown into turmoil when his gym teacher announces that a new county rule has gone into effect that requires every student to take a shower after gym class. Terrified of the inevitable torment and humiliation that will befall him, Sam convinces his friends Neil and Bill to band together to protest the shower requirement. The situation with Nick's band gets worse when Lindsay offers Nick advice on how to stand up to his lazy bandmates. When Nick starts pushing his colleagues to practice more, they turn on him, saying, "You and Yoko are turning music into work." Sam's boycott on bathing starts to fall apart when Neil and Bill give in and decide to shower. Sam takes to hiding in toilet stalls to avoid being forced into the showers by his unsympathetic gym teacher. Ostracized by his friends, Nick decides to try out for a successful local rock band and books an audition. After talking with his parents, Sam decides to face the music and finally take a shower. Commercials deleted.
