ANY DAY NOW: UNFINISHED SYMPHONY {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot in this drama series about best friends M.E. and Rene, a white woman and black woman living in Birmingham, Alabama. Episodes often flash back to the 1960s -- at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement -- to show how the women's friendship was forged. In this episode, Rene returns home to Alabama from Washington, D.C., for her father's funeral. M.E. reads about the funeral and decides to pay her respects even though the two women have been out of touch since a bitter fight years ago when Rene tried to convince M.E. to have an abortion rather than marry her husband, Collier; have a family; and renounce her career. M.E. pays her respects to Rene's family and tries to rekindle her relationship with her former best friend, but Rene is initially reluctant. M.E. invites Rene over to dinner to meet her family, but the evening goes badly: Collier is irritable after having lost his job, rebellious daughter Kelly causes a scene, and Rene and M.E. rehash the argument that originally ended their relationship. After much resistance, Rene's boyfriend Garrett joins her in Alabama, but they break up when he learns that she wants to remain there and continue the meaningful work her father did as a civil-rights lawyer. Finally, M.E. comforts her friend, and they mend their differences. Commercials deleted.
