FREAKS AND GEEKS: THE DIARY (TV)

Summary

One in this series about two distinct groups of high schoolers in 1980 Michigan -- the Freaks, hoodish outcasts-by-choice who love heavy metal, cars, and defying authority; and the Geeks, physically and socially underdeveloped kids who revel in science fiction and impersonations of their comedy idols. In this episode, when Lindsay and Kim get caught hitchhiking, the Weirs begin to worry about Kim's influence on their daughter -- so they invite Kim's mother to dinner to find out more about Kim. Meanwhile, the Geeks are tired of being picked last for softball teams, so Bill swipes a list of teachers' phone numbers, and they start making prank calls to Coach Fredricks. The Weirs' dinner with Mrs. Kelly proves enlightening, and they forbid Lindsay to hang out with Kim in future. Kim is hurt by this news and stops speaking to Lindsay. The Weirs check up on Lindsay by reading her diary and discover that she believes them to be boring "robots," so Mrs. Weir tries to spice things up a bit. In an effort to catch the prankster, Coach Fredricks calls his students into his office, one at a time, to read a transcript of the call. He recognizes Bill as the culprit, but after Bill gives an explanation and expresses his displeasure with the coach's team-picking policies, Coach Fredricks decides to try letting Bill and Gordon act as captains.
