WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: GEPPETTO (TV)
Summary
One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This made-for-television production is based on Carlo Collodi's book "Pinocchio," but told from Geppetto's point of view. As the narrative opens, excitement spreads among the boys and girls of Villagio as Geppetto has just completed his toys for the new season. Children rush to his store to get their favorites while singing "Toys." After observing some disciplinary problems, Geppetto laments why people that aren't good parents have children. Meanwhile, he remains without a child, though desperately wanting one. While alone that night, Geppetto pulls out Pinocchio, his wooden marionette of a life-size boy, wishing he was a real son. A lonely Geppetto sings of his "Empty Heart" to his cat, Figaro. That night, Geppetto is awakened by the Blue Fairy, who grants his wish to turn Pinocchio into a boy, though one made of wood. Geppetto is shocked to see Pinocchio come to life, and encouraged to hear that the Blue Fairy promised to one day make him into a real boy if he's "good." Being good is an immediate struggle for Pinocchio, as he immediately commandeers his father's bed and then won't let him get to sleep. The next morning, Geppetto introduces Pinocchio to the villagers, singing "And Son" to tell of his hopes to have someone who'll inherit his toy business. The next day, Geppetto continues to struggle with his rambunctious son, who is curious about the world around him. Geppetto starts to teach Pinocchio to be a toymaker, but the boy shows little interest. Soon, Geppetto has decided that Pinocchio should be sent to school. On his first day of classes, Pinocchio gets into a scrape with a classmate for continually mimicking others' words. Geppetto explains to the teacher that Pinocchio was only following his orders to "act like all the other children." Still, Pinocchio is sent home. En route, the boy is seen by puppeteer Stromboli, who thinks Pinocchio would be an excellent addition to his show. Back at home, Geppetto punishes the petulant Pinocchio, who begins crying, forcing his father to send him to his room. There, Pinocchio breaks one of Geppetto's music boxes, claiming that it fell on its own. Clearly lying, Pinocchio's nose begins growing, longer and longer with each lie. Geppetto punishes Pinocchio again and then seeks out the Blue Fairy. She claims to never make mistakes, even though Geppetto thinks Pinocchio "defective." The Blue Fairy and Geppetto discuss the problems of child-rearing, singing that "Just Because It's Magic" doesn't mean life will be perfect. Storming home, determined to discipline his son, Geppetto is stunned to find that the boy has run away to live with Stromboli. Geppetto sadly sings "And Son" again, realizing what he's lost. Meanwhile, a happy Pinocchio sings "I've Got No Strings" while performing in Stromboli's show. Geppetto then goes to Stromboli's tent to see the performance. After the show, Stromboli locks up his "valuable stringless puppet" in a cage, upsetting the boy. Geppetto goes to Stromboli and demands to see Pinocchio. Meanwhile, Pinocchio manages to escape his cage and catch a ride on the Pleasure Island caravan. Angered, Stromboli knows he needs to locate Pinocchio in order to keep his show great. He sings "Bravo, Stromboli!" in anticipation of recapturing Pinocchio. Still upset, Geppetto also searches for Pinocchio. Soon, he again comes upon the Blue Fairy, who wonders if he has seen the error of his ways. She reprises "Just Because It's Magic." Soon, Geppetto comes upon Lazardo, an incompetent magician tied up in a tree. Geppetto wonders why the man is a magician when he's so bad with sleight-of-hand. The magician explains that it is his father's occupation and he was forced into it. Geppetto suddenly wonders if was wrong to try to make Pinocchio into a toymaker. After Geppetto departs, the Blue Fairy appears and Lazardo asks her if his act of deception was convincing. Next, Geppetto travels to Idyllia, a seemingly perfect town filled with remarkably well-behaved children. He is led to Professor Buonragazzo, who shows him a child-making machine. Geppetto wonders why the professor would make children out of a machine. The professor explains that the children are made to order by their "parents," after which he sings of "Satisfaction Guaranteed." Geppetto quickly flees the town, again running into the Blue Fairy. She tries to lead him toward Pinocchio, while revealing that Stromboli is also hot on the wooden boy's trail. The Blue Fairy points Geppetto toward Pleasure Island. There, the Ringleader performs "Pleasure Island" with the other circus members. Geppetto arrives on the crazy scene, as does Stromboli. Both go searching for Pinocchio but Stromboli finds him first. The Ringleader has Stromboli thrown from the premises, In the meantime, Geppetto learns the island's secret: that after the boys indulge in its pleasures, they start to physically transform into jackasses. Eventually, Geppetto tracks Pinocchio down, trying to convince him to leave. Pinocchio rats Geppetto out as being "a parent," which is verboten on Pleasure Island. As Pinocchio persists, his metamorphosis into a donkey begins. Ultimately, Geppetto can't figure out which of a group of donkeys is his son. Soon, he realizes that the four-legged Pinocchio has been taken by sea to work in a salt mine. Geppetto then gives chase in a rowboat. However, a whale comes after Geppetto's boat, swallowing him up. Pinocchio observes his father's fate and jumps in the water to save him, at which point his donkey skin slips off and he returns to being a wooden boy. The whale swallows him as well. In the whale's belly with Geppetto, Pinocchio frets that he'll never be a real boy, and Geppetto slowly admits that maybe he wasn't the greatest father. Recalling old times, they sing "And Son." Then, Geppetto and Pinocchio use the boy's tendency to lie to grow his nose long enough to reach the whale's uvula. They then make the whale sneeze them back into the water. Once on land again, father and son walk home, finding Stromboli there waiting for them. He claims that he owns Pinocchio, based on a contract the boy signed. Geppetto tries to stop Stromboli, singing that, "Since I Gave My Heart Away," he can't live without Pinocchio. However, Stromboli grabs Pinocchio and tries to run away with him. Geppetto calls the Blue Fairy, who claims she can no longer help him. Then, the Blue Fairy works her magic by turning Pinocchio into a real boy, something of no use to the puppeteer. Now, Pinocchio and his father can live happily ever after, finally becoming "Geppetto and Son." Includes commercials.
