SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {KEVIN BACON, INXS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. This episode, which is hosted by actor Kevin Bacon and features musical guest INXS, focuses primarily on the current engagement of the United States in war in the Persian Gulf. The program opens with a sketch that parodies nosy journalists, who ask Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney (Phil Hartman) questions that, if answered, would give valuable confidential information to the Iraqis. Rob Schneider's infamous "Copy Guy" then appears to taunt harried office workers. The next sketch, "The Dark Side with Nat X," is one of several recurring skits that appear within the episode. Militant African-American host Nat X (Chris Rock) interviews Colin Powell (Tim Meadows), asking whether President Bush makes the general fetch him coffee. Nat X's tirade is followed by a bit titled "The Sarcastic Clapping Family of Southampton," about a wealthy clan that is unable to take even the most neutral of comments seriously. Australian band INXS then plays the song "Bitter Tears." During the program's traditional "Weekend Update" news parody, anchor Dennis Miller presents special commentary from guest correspondent A. Whitney Brown on the notion of a "smart" bomb. After the news, Al Franken offers some "Daily Affirmations" via the self-help character Stuart Smalley. INXS then plays "Suicide Blonde." In the final sketch, a lonely Desert Storm soldier (Kevin Bacon) sings a romantic ballad called "Cleaning My Rifle, Thinking of You." Commercials deleted.
