HOROWITZ PLAYS MOZART (TV)
Summary
This documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at piano maestro Vladimir Horowitz's recording of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major with conductor Carlo Maria Giulini and the Orchestra of La Scala, his first studio recording in 35 years. The program begins with Horowitz preparing for his session and warming up his fingers. Then he is joined by the Orchestra as he plays the first movement in its entirety, with only "one false note" by his account. During the break, he answers reporters' questions, discussing such topics as his personal relationship to Mozart's music; the "crisis of composers" today; performing with Giulini; New York and Chicago's "terrible" orchestras; and the role of the critic. Then he is again joined by the Orchestra as he plays the second movement in its entirety, thinking it a bit "soggy" afterward. Horowitz finishes by joining the Orchestra for the third movement, which he plays in its entirety after one rushed misstep. Afterward, Horowitz's wife, Wanda Toscanini Horowitz, discusses her husband's performance.
