VERISSIMO {ITALIAN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of nightly news programs. Anchor Cristina Paroli begins with the presentation of the latest headlines, including a tragic explosion in Caserna; the investigation of mysterious fires in Ancona; the escalation of tension in the Middle East; and the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule the Florida court's approval of a recount in the American presidential elections, a decision that may swing the presidential victory from Al Gore to George W. Bush. The program then moves on to special reports. First, Alberto Duval examines the mysterious fires in five hospitals in Ancona, which may have been set by someone seeking revenge against the hospitals. Victims and hospital workers relate the sequence of events that led to the fires and speak of the terror that reigns now in the hospitals, where both patients and medical personnel fear new incidents. Next, Mia Sevolon reports on the desperate need for water in Sicily. Residents of the region explain that in many cases they have had no running water for thirteen days in a row. Footage is shown of cisterns on the roofs of houses, used to collect rain water. Sevolon concludes that the problem stems not just from a shortage but rather from bad regional distribution of water. From the lack of water, the program segues to women of water, with a piece by Angela Pereira about the first graduating class of females in the Marina, the Italian navy. Viewers learn that these thirty-two women are proving that the Navy is not solely for men; they are fearless and passionate about their careers. Next, Lorenzo Monteso covers what the program calls "the Italian Las Vegas," la Romagna, a city famous for its discos and night clubs. Monteso suggests that the metropolis is popular with both ordinary and famous people -- and a favorite destination for single women. The program ends with more news, as well as reports on celebrities, covering the rapid recovery of television star Simona Ventura from childbirth; the culinary career of "Big Brother" contestant Lorenzo Battistello, who prepares a dish for the camera; a new calendar featuring Battistello's fellow "Big Brother" alum, Sicilian star Marina LaRosa; and the announcement that actress Geena Davis will wed for a fourth time. Commercials deleted.
