60 MINUTES {THE GAUNTLET; BOB DOLE OF KANSAS; LAW AND DISORDER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, "The Gauntlet," Mike Wallace reports on what he calls a "three-day sexual debauchery" at the Navy's Tailhook Association convention in September 1991 at the Las Vegas Hilton. He says that naval and marine aviators sexually assaulted scores of women who were led through a "gauntlet" of drunken men -- but not one man has been convicted. Wallace interviews several people about the events at the convention, including one Navy flyer who talks about the "leg shaving" he offered the women there. In the second segment, "Bob Dole of Kansas," Steve Kroft reports on the private and political life of Senate minority leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.). Kroft describes Dole's persona in Washington, and then he and Dole talk about Dole's experiences in World War II. Finally, Kroft questions Dole about his future ambitions, and Dole shares his opinion of President Clinton. In the third segment, "Law and Disorder," Morley Safer reports on Judy Sheindlin, a no-nonsense judge who presides over cases in New York City's family court. Safer describes Sheindlin as "shrill" and "testy" and then shows her at work. The judge talks to Safer about her job and about what she terms her "outspoken" attitude. Finally, she explains that what keeps her going is being able to make a positive difference in people's lives. In the fourth segment, Andy Rooney discusses federal and state taxes on cigarettes. He compares cigarette smokers to alcoholics and touches on the many people who cluster outside their workplaces to smoke. He explains that government subsidies on tobacco have made this weed "the single most profitable crop in the United States" and wonders why the government doesn't tax other products that aren't good for us, like French fries. Finally, Mike Wallace reads letters from viewers. Commercials deleted.
