MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE: HELLO, GOOD-BYE, PACKAGE 18
Summary
Tape one of two. Hello, Good-bye presents three months
of pilots, premieres, and final programs from the annals
of episodic television. Although it is by no means a
definitive collection, this screening series showcases
many of the most remarkable episodes ever to open or
close a television series. Included are programs and
footage that have rarely or never been aired, such as
screen tests by John Travolta and Farrah Fawcett-Majors
for "Welcome Back, Kotter" (Travolta got a part;
Fawcett-Majors didn't); Rod Serling's pitch to potential
sponsors on behalf of "The Twilight Zone"; and the
bizarre 1999 Ben Stiller-directed pilot "Heat Vision and
Jack," starring cult favorites Jack Black and Owen
Wilson. Mostly, however, this screening series is about
the familiar. It reminds us of the power of the medium
of television to help viewers fall in love with
characters like Mary Richards, the Beaver, and Alex P.
Keaton -- and then to force them to adjust when they
must confront life without Hawkeye Pierce, Larry
Sanders, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Kimble, and the staff
at St. Eligius. Hello, Good-bye This section showcases
premieres and finales of the same series, enabling
viewers to trace the evolution of a series in a single
sitting, whether it be Jackie Gleason's infamous game
show "You're in the Picture," which lasted only two
weeks, or "Family Ties," which lasted seven seasons.
"Family Ties"
This hit sitcom was originally a family show about the
generation gap between two ex-hippies and their three
uncomprehending children, but as the series evolved the
focus shifted to the budding superstar Michael J. Fox.
In the emotional final episode, Fox's Alex P. Keaton
leaves the family nest in Ohio for a career on Wall
Street. (1982/1989; 90 minutes)
"The Wonder Years"
Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) grew from young boy to young
man in this nostalgic dramedy, which began with Kevin's
disastrous first day at junior high in 1968 and ended
with a poignant epilogue filling viewers in on what had
happened to each of the characters. The first program
is closed-captioned; the second is not. (1988/1993; 75
minutes.)
