ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT {COVERAGE OF TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)
Summary
This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 3:30 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, as anchor Elizabeth Vargas announces that the Boston Globe has run an article declaring that a car believed to be registered to a passenger on one of the hijacked flights has been discovered in the parking lot of Logan Airport in Boston. The car reportedly contained Arab-language flight manuals. Jim Sciutto at the Pentagon then reports that everyone there is frustrated by the ongoing blaze at the building. Reporter Derek McGinty joins Vargas for an analysis of the contents of the editorials that have begun to appear in early editions of newspapers throughout the nation. Vargas then reruns a tape of Peter Jennings's earlier conversation with Alice Hoglan, the mother of United Flight 93 passenger Mark Bingham, who called her as the plane was being hijacked. Next, Bill Blakemore speaks from the site of the collapsed Twin Towers, explaining that many people there have discussed the fact that in building collapses caused by earthquakes survivors are often found even days after the original tragedy. McGinty then reports that Washington, D.C., police have advised the World Bank to consider moving or canceling the massive meeting it has planned in the Nation's Capitol in two weeks. Vargas then replays Jennings's interview with former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger, in which Eagleburger states his belief that, if Osama bin Laden is found to be responsible for the attacks, the United States should attack Afghanistan for harboring him. Vargas then speaks with reporter Rebecca Cooper in Washington, D.C., about the intelligence breakdown that could have led up to the attacks. Alison Stewart also provides an update on activity in New York hospitals. Vargas then airs a tape in which Joe Torres, a reporter for New York ABC affiliate WABC-TV, stands in the middle of Church Street as Tower One collapses nearby. The reporter was not hurt, Vargas states, but the footage is among the closest to the scene of the tragedy.
