METROPOLITAN OPERA PRESENTS, THE: THE JAMES LEVINE 25TH ANNIVERSARY GALA {TAPE 2 OF 4} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:68755. Tape 2 of 4. One in this series of concerts performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. In this production, James Levine, artistic director of the Met and principal conductor, is celebrated for his 25 years at the opera house in a live marathon performance on April 27, 1996. The evening's tribute is to feature 58 singers, all of whom will be conducted by Levine. Peter Allen, who has been with the Met's Saturday radio broadcast for 21 seasons, introduces the various selections and singers. Host Garrick Utley opens the second part of the program with a backstage interview with Levine. They discuss Levine's life at the Met, why he never wanted to be a guest conductor, and how the microphone diffuses singers' energy. When the program resumes, the following numbers are performed: the Act 2 Trio from Giuseppe Verdi's "Ernani," sung by Placido Domingo, Deborah Voigt, and Roberto Scandiuzzi; "Au fond du temple saint" from Georges Bizet's "Les Pecheurs de Perles," sung by Roberto Alagna and Bryn Terfel; "Juliet's Waltz" from Charles Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette," sung by Ruth Ann Swenson; "Pourquoi me reveiller?" from Jules Massenet's "Werther," sung by Alfredo Kraus; "D'amour l'ardente flamme" from Hector Berlioz's "La Damnation de Faust," sung by Jessye Norman; "Deh! vieni, non tardar" from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro," sung by Dawn Upshaw; "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" from Franz Lehar's "Das Land des Lechelns," sung by Jerry Hadley; "Watch Duet" from Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus," sung by Karita Mattila and Hakan Hagegard; "Nemico della patria" from Umberto Giordano's "Andrea Chenier," sung by Sherill Milnes; "Isolde's Narrative and Curse" from Richard Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde," sung by Waltraud Meier; Act 3 Duet from Gaetano Donizetti's "Don Pasquale," sung by Mark Oswald and Paul Plishka; "Quando le sere al placido" from Verdi's "Luisa Miller," sung by Carlo Bergonzi; Act 3 Septet from Jacques Offenbach's "Les Contes d"Hoffmann," sung by Florence Quivar, Rosalind Elias, Kraus, Charles Anthony, James Courtney, Plishka, and the 80 members of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, led by Raymond Hughes; and "Madre, pietosa Vergine" from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino," sung by Sharon Sweet and the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, again led by Hughes.
