Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part four of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "A Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s.Ê While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel.Ê In this installment tensions develop in the love triangle; Baoyu faces confrontations with Li Mama and his father; the Jia family celebrates Jia Jing's birthday in his absence; and Qin Keqing falls ill.Ê It begins with Jia Baoyu's visit to Xue Baochai, who has not been well but is now better.Ê While examining each other's jade and gold pendants, they are amazed to find that the inscriptions match.Ê Later, Lin Daiyu comes to visit, and they all have lunch together with Auntie Xue.Ê Baoyu wants to drink cold wine, but Baochai advises him not to, and Baoyu obeys her. Daiyu becomes jealous, complaining that Baoyu never listens to her.Ê Baoyu is impatient upon his return to his unit and he throws a fit when he finds that Li Mama has eaten some food that he had left for Qingwen and has drunk his good tea.Ê Xiren and his other maids manage to calm him down.Ê On the next day, Baoyu pays his respects to his father, Jia Zheng, before school, but his father sends him away, reprimanding him for not paying enough attention to his studies.Ê Later, it is Jia Jing's birthday (a respected elder), but he is a Daoist monk and does not want to be bothered.Ê The Jia family pays respects to an emptied chair reserved for him.Ê Qin Keqing falls suddenly ill, and Wang Xifeng and Baoyu go to visit her, but Keqing says she will not live to see it past the New Year.
