XI YOU JI: DA ZHAN HONGHAIER {JOURNEY TO THE WEST: WUKONG HAS A BIG FIGHT WITH THE RED BOY} {PT. 14 OF 25} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. Part fourteen of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to The West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s. This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In this installment, Sanzang and his three pupils (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng) triumph over a young master known as Honghaier (the Red Boy). Part fourteen begins as the four travelers come to a very quiet mountain surrounded by lakes. They hear a boy crying for help, but only Sun Wukong can tell that the boy is a monster, so the others, especially Sanzang, want Wukong to save him. So as not to upset his master, Wukong saves the boy, but the boy then goes after Sanzang and captures him. Wukong asks the local soil and mountain deities for help, and they tell Wukong that the boy is the son of Niu Mowang, an old friend of Wukong. Since they are friends of the Red Boy's father, Wukong and Zhu Bajie go to see the boy and try to talk to him. The Red Boy, however, doesn't believe them to be his father's friends and burns them with his fire. Next Wukong gets the Eastern Sea Dragon King to help them, but the Red Boy still manages to burn them, injuring Wukong badly. Since Wukong is hurt, Bajie goes to find the Goddess of Mercy for help, but the Red Boy disguises himself as the Goddess of Mercy and lures Bajie into his cave. Now that Bajie is also captured, the Red Boy invites his parents to join him for a feast to eat Sanzang and Bajie. Fortunately, Wukong recovers and goes to the Red Boy's cave. Posing as the Red Boy's father, Wukong tries to persuade the Red Boy to release Sanzang and Bajie, but the boy soon discovers Wukong's disguise, and they begin a big fight. When Wukong is about to win, the Goddess of Mercy comes to take the Red Boy away. She makes the Red Boy her young servant, and Sanzang and his three pupils continue with their journey to the West.
