XI YOU JI: QU JING NUER {JOURNEY TO THE WEST: FUNNY
ENCOUNTERS IN THE COUNTRY OF NUER} {PT. 16 OF 25}
{MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

Part sixteen of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to The West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s. This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In this installment, Sanzang and his three pupils (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng) have some humorous adventures in the country known as NŸer (Women). Part sixteen begins as the four travelers enter NŸer, where all the citizens are women. Sanzang and Zhu Bajie mistakenly drink some lake water that makes people pregnant. Without knowing of their condition, the four travelers enter the palace to get their border pass approved by the Reigning Queen, who is very attracted by Sanzang's handsome features and delays her approval. The Reigning Queen asks them to stay for a few days, and sends her Taishi (Grand Master) to arrange her marriage Sanzang. Yet before Taishi can ask Sanzang about the marriage, she discovers that Sanzang and Bajie are pregnant and about to give birth, so she sends Sun Wukong to find the antidote water at a nearby well. Wukong discovers, however, that the guard of the well is a friend of Niu Mowang, a monster who wants to avenge Wukong for entrapping his son, the Red Boy, in part fourteen. Wukong then has no choice but to fight the guard, and after some fighting, Wukong defeats the guard and brings the antidote water back to Sanzang and Bajie. After Sanzang's recovery, the Reigning Queen gives Sanzang a tour of her beautiful palace garden, and again sends Taishi to ask Sanzang for marriage. Sanzang flatly refuses, and the Reigning Queen places guards to prevent them from leaving. Next, the Reigning Queen prepares a banquet for his three pupils, while at the same time luring Sanzang to visit her in her sleeping quarters. Although the Reigning Queen tries all methods to seduce Sanzang, he refuses her again and again. Just when Sanzang is about to end their conversation, a Pipa Monster, disguised as a court entertainer, enters, captures Sanzang, and brings him to her cave. As usual, Wukong comes to rescue Sanzang, but the Pipa Monster uses her special instrument, a "pipa," to distract Wukong, and Wukong loses the fight. Bajie tries to fight the Pipa Monster next, but he also loses to the monster. Then suddenly, a god named Angri Xingguan appears to help them by turning the Pipa Monster into her true form -- a chicken. Afterwards, Sanzang and his three pupils take leave of the Reigning Queen, who finally agrees to let them go, and they continue with their journey to the West.
