XI YOU JI: SAN DIAO BAJIAO SHAN {JOURNEY TO THE
WEST: THREE ATTEMPTS TO BORROW THE BANANA FAN}
{PT. 17 OF 25} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part seventeen
of twenty-five in this television adaptation of the
classic Chinese supernatural-fantasy novel, "Journey to
The West," written by Wu Chengen in the mid-1500s.
This adaptation follows the journey of the Tang monk
Sanzang and his three pupils, detailing their adventures
with monsters and gods as they travel to the Western
Heaven seeking the three higher Buddhist scriptures. In
this installment, Sun Wukong tries to borrow a special
iron fan from Princess Tieshan (Princess Iron Fan) to
put out a large mountain fire. In part seventeen
Sanzang and his three pupils (Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and
Sha Seng) travel across a land made hot and arid by a
persistent fire on a nearby mountain. The fire was
originally started by the remains of the big burning
cauldron that Wukong escaped from 500 years ago (PT.
3), and it has been burning ever since. They learn of
Princess Tieshan who lives on a nearby mountain and has
a banana-shaped iron fan that can completely extinguish
the fire. Wukong goes to see her to borrow her special
fan, but soon realizes she is the wife of Niu Mowang and
mother of the Red Boy, who Wukong fought and captured
in part fourteen. Princess Tieshan blames Wukong for
entrapping her son and refuses to lend him her special
fan. Wukong tries three times to steal the fan, but
each time the Princess discovers him, and he ends up
fighting with her. After three attempts, Wukong finally
succeeds in getting the fan and uses it to extinguish
the fire. With these events behind them, the four
travelers continue with their journey to the West.
