Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part eight of
thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "A Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao
Xueqin in the mid-1700s.Ê While this adaptation follows
the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu)
and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue
Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four
elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel.
In this installment, the Jia family finally receives the
long awaited visit from Jia Yuanchun, who has not seen
her family for over ten years because she has been
serving as a concubine to the Emperor, but the visit ends
abruptly when Yuanchun is called away during the opera
performed in her honor. The scene opens showing
everyone in the Jia family eager for Yuanchun's arrival,
and she and her large staff finally arrive very late
that night. She spends time meeting her family members
and tours the new complex built for her by her family,
which she humbly appreciates. She changes some of the
names of the interior chambers and names the complex
"Garden of Grand View." When everyone comes to pay
their respects to her, she admits that she has missed
her family very much over the years. Yuanchun meets her
younger brother Jia Baoyu and is stunned at how much he
has grown since she last saw him. Yuanchun then tests
the young people's poetry, and praises Baoyu and Lin
Daiyu's work as the best. She also reprimands them for
spending too much money on her visit, especially the
construction of the "Garden of Grand View," which she
says is extravagant. Yuanchen and her family join in
watching an opera performed especially for her visit.
But before the show is over, the warm visit is brought
to an early end when one of her eunuchs reminds her that
it is time to leave.
