Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part thirteen
of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the
classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written
by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation
follows the love triangle between the main male heir
(Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu
and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the
four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the
novel. In this installment, Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu's
courtship continues and begins to provoke reactions.
Part thirteen begins with Jia Baoyu running after Lin
Daiyu to find out why she's angry with him. Daiyu
finally tells him how she was locked out when she came
to visit him the previous night. Baoyu swears it was
not his idea, and that he will punish the maid who
turned her away. Later, Jia Yuanchun sends some gifts,
but while Baoyu and Xue Baochai have the same gift,
Daiyu has a lesser gift, and this makes Baoyu wonder
why some seem to favor the pairing of him with Baochai,
rather than with Daiyu. The whole family goes to stay
at a Daoist Temple for the next few days. The temple
keeper (a wise old Daoist monk) mentions Baoyu's jade
pendant and Baochai's gold pendant, also suggesting that
Baoyu and Baochai are a pair, increasing Baoyu and
Daiyu's nervousness about their future. Daiyu falls ill
the next day, and Baoyu goes to visit her, but they end
up having a big fight about the jade and gold pendants.
By the end Baoyu wants to throw his jade pendant away.
This upsets everyone so much that Mother Jia must
intervene to settle the fight, and she scolds them for
their childish behavior.
