HONG LOU MENG: LIULI SHIJIE BAIXUE HONGMEI {DREAM OF RED MANSIONS: WHITE SNOW AND RED PLUM IN A COLORFUL WORLD} {#98} {PT. 19 OF 36} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. Part nineteen of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, Liu Xianglian (a male opera singer) beats up Xue Pan (Xue Baochai's brother) for asking him to be his homosexual lover; Xue Baochai and Lin Daiyu become closer friends; more new cousins to the Jia family are introduced; and finally, the young people start a poetry group. Part nineteen begins when Xue Pan goes to meet Liu Xianglian as they agreed, but Xianglian curses and beats up Xue Pan when he sees him. Some days later, Lin Daiyu is not feeling well again, and Xue Baochai visits her. Baochai advises Daiyu to eat a bird's nest (a Chinese delicacy made from birds' nests), but they are expensive and Daiyu has no money and doesn't want to bother anyone for it. Daiyu is already ashamed that she has to depend on the Jia family completely and is afraid people will talk if she asks for anything more. Baochai understands her position, so she sends over some of her own birds' nests to Daiyu. Seeing how kindly Baochai is treating her, Daiyu now looks at Baochai as a close friend. When Daiyu is well again, Xiangling (Xue Pan's concubine) wants to learn how to write poetry and asks Daiyu for help; Daiyu gladly instructs her. A few days later, several visitors arrive: a pair of Baochai's younger cousins, Xue Baoqin (a woman) and Xue Ke (a man); Lady Xing's niece, Xing Xiuyan; and finally, Shi Xiangyun, a female cousin of Baoyu. Everyone, especially Jia Baoyu, is overjoyed by these beautiful and intelligent new guests, and they decide to start up a poetry group together. They merrily eat venison, drink wine, and create poems by each person saying a line, one after the next. At one point, Baoyu can't come up with a line, and Li Wan (Baoyu's widowed sister-in-law) penalizes him by sending him to get a plum branch from Miaoyu's nunnery nearby. When Baoyu successfully returns with a beautiful branch, his female cousin, Baoqin, wants one too, and so they go off again together.
