WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: DINOTOPIA {PART 2 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." Part two in this three-part miniseries, based on the children's books series by James Gurney, about a utopian world where humans and dinosaurs co-exist peacefully. The narrative begins with Karl, David, Marion and Zippo trying to find their way back to Waterfall City after having gotten lost due to their earlier adventures in the swamp. Eventually, the rescue party of men on brachs, having been sent by the postal bird, locate them and escort them to an earth farm that supplies the food for Waterfall City. Marion's mother Rosemary, known as "matriarch," is in charge of the working community. She examines the ailing David while wondering how Karl has been able to cause so much trouble during his short time in Dinotopia. Later, Rosemary asks her daughter why she defied her father by going to rescue David and Karl. Marion, meanwhile, wonders why her mother has not spoken with her husband in five years. Later, Rosemary catches Karl and Zippo playing table tennis and is predictably upset. She tells Zippo to return to Waterfall City. Before he leaves, Zippo brings David some tea and informs him what has happened in the week he's been sick in bed. David is upset to learn that Karl and Marion are growing closer. Later, Rosemary has a heart-to-heart talk with David, wondering why he goes through life as an unhappy loner. That night, Karl sneaks out of his and David's room and swings like Tarzan into the female ward, where he asks Marion to go for a walk. The next day, Rosemary is angered at Karl and Marion for having broken the rules by leaving their sleeping quarters the previous night. Back in Waterfall City, Zippo informs Mayor Waldo about his discovery of the ancient temple and how it could lead to the world beneath. Waldo rules out any such expedition. That night, Rosemary tells her minions that, with the harvest completed, everyone must move on. But first, they will need to remain silent for four hours and listen to the earth "in order to see how dinosaurs see." Afterward, David tells Karl he can never remember feeling so good, and, it would seem that Karl is beginning to feel likewise. Then, Rosemary assigns each student a habitat. Karl is ordered to stay on the farm and train in the hatchery while David is sent to skybax training in Canyon City. Rosemary does not assign her daughter a habitat and Marion is upset. Her mother explains that Marion is special and can't be confined to one habitat as she is "of everything." She tells her to go to Canyon City with David to study the increasingly aggressive pteranodons there, as well as the sun stone problem. David and Marion ride allosaurus-like Overlanders toward Canyon City as David admits that he is unsure about his future. Reaching Canyon City, David is scared of the canyons' extraordinary height but Marion helps him through it. Then, David and Marion meet with Romana Denison, who takes David to his quarters and presents him with a skybax uniform. Meanwhile, Karl marches toward the hatchery, where he meets Marion's younger sister, Samantha. She presents Karl with an egg -- his dinosaur life partner. At the same time, David and his fellow skybax cadets meet with Oonu, squadron leader and instructor of the corps. Then, Oonu demonstrates how to correctly ride a skybax and David is unsure if he can possibly pilot one. Meanwhile, Karl brings his egg to Rosemary, thinking it must be "a joke." Later, David makes his first attempt on a skybax flight simulator, struggling, and failing, to stay aloft. Meanwhile, Marion notices a unique albino pteranodon struggling to integrate with the rest of his species. Later, David observes that the sun stones are failing in Canyon City, causing the pteranodons to freak out. Mayor Waldo thinks they need to use a calm mind and intellect to fix mounting problems in Waterfall City, but Cyrus disagrees. He brings a pile of failed sun stones to a senate meeting and wants to know how many reserves the city has. Cyrus wants to be granted an expedition to the world beneath to find more stones. His request is denied. Afterward, Cyrus catches up with Zippo, wondering if he can help him read his ancient scroll about the world beneath. Zippo comes back to Cyrus's shop and helps translate the text. Zippo also tells him that Karl and David are alive. Then, Zippo realizes that all of Cyrus's artifacts are stolen. However, before he can leave to report Cyrus to the authorities, the man clobbers the dinosaur over the head and knocks him out before disposing of him. The next morning, Karl receives a messenger bird who delivers a greeting from Marion. Later, Samantha tells Karl about his soon-to-hatch chasmosaurus. Then, the chasmosaurus breaks its shell, immediately thinking Karl to be her mother. Meanwhile, some men fish Zippo out of the water where Cyrus tossed him, while David and his fellow trainees climb around a windy and narrow cliff in the canyons. During the walk, David begins having a panic attack and Romana helps quell his vertigo. Then, all the cadets are forced to make a highly dangerous jump as part of the skybax rituals, but David refuses. Meanwhile, Marion goes beyond the safety barriers and finally approaches the albino pteranodon. She tries to befriend him, but instead ends up angering the other pteranodons and is attacked. That night, Oonu speaks with David, who still doesn't understand why people think he is fit to be a skybax. Oonu doesn't think David is actually frightened of heights and insists that he will not fail his course. After David rescues Marion, Oonu tells Marion that her study of pteranodons is now over. Meanwhile, Karl names his pteranodon Twenty-Six, though he still doesn't wish to keep her. Back at training, David recalls a World War II strategy for dividing up the dangerous pteranodon herd. Later, Romana helps David perfect the art of skybax riding, which Marion watches with a bit of jealousy. Cyrus catches Karl patching up a canoe. He tells Karl that he has been thrown out of Waterfall City. Cyrus also tells Karl he will assist him in escaping from Dinotopia. Eventually, the cadets complete their training and are awarded special saddles. Oonu also notes that pteranodons are hunting above the sentinel line and that Canyon City has a sundown curfew. He then tells David that he won't receive a saddle until he spends a night with the skybax in their nest. Marion offers to help David climb to their nest and he agrees. At the same time, Cyrus says he can only help Karl if he swipes a sun stone for him. During their climb up toward the skybax nest, David is scared and Marion has to assist him. Then, Marion slips and nearly falls into the canyon, and thus David is forced to pull her to safety. Later, David and Marion talk and he reveals that he thinks he is falling in love with her. She doesn't reciprocate, but admits that she felt jealous when seeing him with Romana. David is angry to learn that Karl has been continually in contact with Marion during her Canyon City stay. Later, Karl makes the climb up the hatchery tower to steal Cyrus's sought-after sun stone. Meanwhile, Cyrus scuttles his boat with a knife. Back in Canyon City, Marion notices that the albino has followed them to the skybax nest. Marion sees he is communing with David and tells David to find the pteranodon's name within himself. David follows through, dubbing the bird Freefall. Soon enough, Samantha notices that both Karl and Twenty-Six are gone. Karl is escaping from Dinotopia on his boat, which begins leaking due to Cyrus's hole. At that time, Cyrus notices that Karl gave him a rock rather that the sun stone. When Twenty-Six observes Karl's dilemma from shore, she jumps into the water, though unable to swim. David abandons the leaking boat and saves Twenty-Six. Meanwhile, Oonu presides at the graduation ceremony for his cadets, during which they have one chance to make the skybax corps. By the time David is prepared to fly, Karl has arrived to root on his brother. However, no skybax responds to David's call and he is immediately dismissed from the corps. Furious at his failure, David makes another unauthorized attempt, this time succeeding as he saddles Freefall and soars off into the canyon. Includes commercials.
