1967 TONY AWARDS, THE (TV)

Summary

The twenty-first annual presentation of the American Theatre Wing Tony (Antoinette Perry) awards for excellence in the Broadway theater, telecast live from the Shubert Theater in New York. Hosted by Mary Martin and Robert Preston, this is the first nationwide telecast in the awards' history. The program includes performances from the four nominated musicals, opening with Joel Grey and the company of "Cabaret" performing "Wilkommen." Martin introduces the accountants for the awards as well as the custodians -- actresses Jill Haworth and Lynn Redgrave. New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay comes out and recognizes the unique contribution of the theater to the cultural life of the nation. John Forsythe and Lee Remick present the award for Best Supporting Actor (Dramatic) to Ian Holm ("Homecoming") and for Best Supporting Actress to Marian Seldes ("A Delicate Balance"). Barbara Harris (with Larry Blyden) performs "Movie Star"/"Gorgeous" from the comedy "The Apple Tree." Lauren Bacall presents the award for Best Actor (Dramatic) to Paul Rogers ("The Homecoming"); Kirk Douglas presents the award for Best Actress (Dramatic) to Beryl Reid ("The Killling of Sister George"). Mary Martin and Robert Preston perform "Nobody's Perfect" from "I Do! I Do!". Producer David Merrick, most recently of "I Do! I Do!," recognizes the television audience and thanks American Airlines for its sponsorship; he then presents the award for Best Dramatic Play to Harold Pinter for "The Homecoming." Marge and Gower Champion present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical Play to Joel Grey ("Cabaret") and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical Play to Peg Murray ("Cabaret"). Norman Wisdom and the company of "Walking Happy" perform the musical's title song. Harry Belafonte presents the award for Best Choreographer to Ron Field ("Cabaret"). Carol Burnett presents the award for Best Director of a Musical to Harold Prince ("Cabaret"). Zero Mostel presents the award for Best Actress in a Musical to Barbara Harris ("The Apple Tree"). Angela Lansbury presents the award for Best Actor in a Musical to Robert Preston ("I Do! I Do!). Barbra Streisand presents the award for Best Musical Play to "Cabaret" (accepted by Fred Ebb, the lyricist). Martin and Preston conclude the ceremony. Commercials deleted.
