SENAL 2000: EL CAMBIO DE SIGLO {SIGNAL 2000: THE TURN OF THE CENTURY} {SEGMENT} {TAPE 6 OF 6} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:71796. One of several segments of live and continuous coverage of the countdown leading up to the year 2000, as aired on TV Azteca in Mexico. This segment begins at 11 hours, 37 minutes, and 2 seconds in the countdown and runs until 9:58:00, a little over an hour and a half. This segment begins in media res as a TV Azteca correspondent completes his report from the Medina family home. Next, host Javier Alatorre goes to Juan Luis Rodr’guez in Acapulco and Edgar Galicia from Mexico City's own Z—cala for brief updates on preparations for the night's festivities. In prerecorded segments, singer Enrique Iglesias, singer Ana Gabriel, actor Leonardo Garc’a, and producer Elisa Salinas list their wishes for the New Year. Back live in the studio, Alatorre and actors Sergio Bas‡–ez and Claudia Islas, discuss their hopes for the New Year. Footage of welcoming in the New Year in the Phillipines, just minutes old, is shown. In a prerecorded segment, reporter Nacho Nu–ez visits a local street market and speaks with vendors about the candles, bells, herbs, and other items that people can buy to ensure good fortune in the New Year. This is immediately followed by breaking news, reported by Marco Campillo, of a shooting at a clothing store in Neza; two policemen and three civilians are being held hostage by thieves inside the store. Back in the studio, Islas and Bas‡–ez depart, but Don Benjam’n Ch‡vez from the Mandarin House restaurant joins Alatorre with a demonstration of Chinese cooking for the New Year's celebration. Next, Mark Tacher, telenovela actor and host of his own show, joins Alatorre. Alatorre then checks in with several reporters around the country: Armando Contreras reports from Tepepan Xochimilco, at the home of the Bonilla family, where the children's festivities are in full swing; Rodr’guez reports again from Acapulco from the Paradise restaurant as he samples a special local seafood dish; Capillo gives an update on the release of the hostages from the clothing store, although the thieves remain inside the building; Gloria Witt reports from Cancun, speaking with several tourists, as well as with the singer Carlos Cuevas, who are spending the New Year there. Back in the studio, Alatorre welcomes nutritionist Luz Irene Moreno, who advises viewers on how to get through the holidays in good health. In a prerecorded segment, politicians CuauhtŽmoc C‡rdenas and Manuel Camacho Sol’s detail their hopes for the New Year. Psychic Thelma Xiomara arrives, predicting a New Year of good fortune, and giving Alatorre, Tacher, and Islas (who has returned) individual readings. Alatorre then bids Tacher and Islas farewell. Then, Alatorre goes to Marcos Valdez and Lorena PŽrez J‡come; they introduce singer Lidia Cavazos, who performs "H‡blale de M’" ("Tell Him About Me"). Back in the studio, actor Sergio Bas‡–ez returns. Several of the European correspondents check in with details of how Europeans plan to celebrate: Lilly TŽllez reports from Paris, France, on the ferris wheels that have been constructed along the Champs ElysŽe; Jaime Guerrero reports from Rome, Italy, on the preponderance of foreigners in the city for the Jubilee; and Alberto G—mez reports from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid with interviews from people on the street. Lastly, Romina Castro arrives in the studio and sings "Blanco y Negro" ("Black and White"). The last twenty-three minutes of the tape contain a studio screen with no further broadcast footage. Coverage resumes after a break with T:71879.

(This segment contains minor technical problems and includes non-broadcast coverage as the camera stays with the studio feed during commercial breaks. This represents the best copy of this program currently available to the Museum.)
