CUENTAME COMO PASO: LAS INVASORAS {REMEMBER WHEN: THE INVADERS} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series, set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, about the Alcántara family who live under Gen. Francisco Franco's dictatorship but dream of something better. Antonio and Mercedes Alcántara live in a Madrid apartment with Mercedes's mother, Herminia, and their three children, Carlos, Ines, and Toni. This episode opens in the summer of 1968. Carlos, now an adult, narrates the story of this period, looking back on the summer when the television series "The Invaders" became such a popular hit, and his father Antonio was planning to move his family to France. Antonio's brother Miguel lives there with his French wife and daughter, in what he believes to be a much better life. The children are looking forward to the move, but Mercedes and Herminia do not want to move. Miguel and his family arrive on their first trip to Spain in over twenty years. The differences between the families are immediately clear: they have a car, many personal belongings, and can afford to travel. That is all that Antonio wishes for his family, and he presses his brother to find him a job where he works. Miguel confesses that he's not as happy as Antonio thinks: work is hard, he's treated badly even by his wife, and he misses his home and family in Spain. In the end, Miguel confesses that the car is a wreck, that they don't live in a house but in an apartment, and that he's paid poorly as an unskilled laborer, as opposed to what he always claimed to be, an automobile mechanic. This persuades Antonio to stay in Spain with his family, but he never confesses the real reasons to his children. The episode concludes with the moral that, for people who once lived as immigrants for so many years, it's surprising to see how they seem to forget it and treat immigrants disrespectfully today.
