Summary

The third edition (1991) of this yearly music awards presentation program which honors Latin music achievements in the United States.

This year's program, presented by Univision and Billboard Magazine live from Miami, Florida and hosted by Antonio Vodanovic, gives awards in the categories of Pop/Ballad, Tropical/Salsa, and Regional Mexican; this year also includes the introduction of an award for best music video and two special excellence awards to Plácido Domino and Juan Gabriel. The program opens with a dance production number to a medley of the songs nominated from the best albums of the year in all three categories. Presentations and performances in this segment include the following: Lucía Méndez and Marco Antonio Solís (from Los Bukis) present the first award, for best female artist in the Pop/Ballad category, to Ana Gabriel, and the second award, for best group in the Tropical/Salsa category, to Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40;. Yuri (and her backup dancers) sing and dance to "Carnaval de oriente" (Vodanovic notes that she was the 1989 winner for best single, Pop/Ballad); Myriam Hernández and Rudy La Scala present the award for best album, Regional Mexican, to Bronco for their "A todo galope"; Willy Chirino presents the award for best new artist, Tropical/Salsa, to Banda Blanca (mentioning their popular single "Sopa de caracol"); Vodanovic introduces the band Mariachi Cobre, who sing an arrangement of Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40's song "Burbujas de amor"; the band La Mafia presents the award for best new artist, Pop/Ballad, to the duo Azúcar Moreno; the host previews the upcoming award for musical excellence, which will be awarded to two important figures in Latin music, Juan Gabriel and Plácido Domingo; Luis Enrique sings "Aventura"; Ana Gabriel and Angel Savier give the award for best group, Regional Mexican, to Los Temerarios, and the award for best group, Pop/Ballad, to Los Bukis; Roberto Levy and Arturo Sandoval present the award for best album, Tropical/Salsa, to Luis Enrique and Eddie Santiago for "Los principios de la salsa"; Daniela Romo performs "Quiero amanecer con alguien"; Azúcar Moreno sings "Tus ojos bandidos"; Andrea Tessa gives the award for best album, Pop/Ballad, to Ana Gabriel, for "Quién como tú"; Vodanovic proceeds to present a performance by Los Tigres del Norte, singing "Estoy enamorado"; Lilly Melgar introduces a new award for music videos: the winner of this category has been chosen by television viewers voting by phone, and will be announced later on in the program; and Myriam Hernández performs an unnamed song. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Chayanne for Pepsi and Celia Cruz for Colgate. Promos include Celia Cruz for Univisi—n's 30th anniversary.

Celia Cruz introduces the first award for musical excellence, which will be awarded to composer Juan Gabriel; the award presentation, which includes Cruz's narrated summary of his career accompanied by images of Gabriel, is interrupted by a commercial break. The program returns with the presentation of the music video award; several videos appear, announced by two unnamed presenters. Maria Conchito Alonso presents the award for best music video to Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40 for "A pedir su mano," produced and composed by Juan Luis Guerra; Angeles Ochoa and Daniela Romo present the award for best song,Tropical/Salsa, to Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40 for "Burbujas de amor," (composed by Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40, produced by Guerra and Bienvenido Rodríguez); Joaquín Blaya, president of Univision, together with an unnamed representative from Billboard, presents the second award for musical excellence of the evening to Plácido Domingo; Blaya narrates a summary of Domingo's career, including images of his career as an opera singer, recording artist, conductor, and popular artist; Domingo gives a short speech after accepting his award; Betty Pino presents a performance by Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40, singing "La bilirrubina"; the duo Azúcar Moreno presents the award for best song, Pop/Ballad, to Ana Gabriel for "Es demasiado tarde," composed by Ana Gabriel and produced by Oscar Gomez. Host Antonio Vodanovic concludes the program by thanking Univision and Billboard. Includes commercials and promos.
