MIRACLES: THE FRIENDLY SKIES (TV)

Summary

One in this series about Paul Callan, an investigator of modern miracles, who is recruited by a mysterious group that examines paranormal experiences. In this episode, a plane headed for Boston goes missing for exactly sixty-four seconds just as it is about to land. Meanwhile, Paul visits Alva Keel, who tells him that he desperately needs a good investigator with the rather "unique gifts" that he possesses. Paul notes that he doesn't believe that the end of the world is coming, as Alva does. Then, Alva tells Paul about the strange occurrence at Logan Airport and they head toward it, along with colleague Evelyn Santos. At the heavily guarded airport, Paul, Alva, and Evelyn are quickly sworn in as paranormal investigators for the "closed door" investigation. First, they are shown a charred corpse, that of passenger 13B, burned in the airport lavatory. Then, Paul and Evelyn are told to interview the passengers in order to determine what happened during the sixty-four seconds. Many of the passengers exhibit odd behavior, with strangers appearing to fall in love with each other, some talking about seeing Satan or bright lights, and others hearing thousands of voices singing. Paul talks to a woman named Karen, who had been handicapped for the past twenty-one years due to a brain injury, but is now able to walk and speak. Evelyn speaks with a child, Deanna, who claims to have seen "the rest of her life" during the event. Even more mysterious, the investigators find American flight attendant Phil speaking in tongues. Meanwhile, Karen's husband Mark searches for her. Later, Alva slows down Phil's ramblings, determining them to be the dead language Aramaic, which he then attempts to translate. At the same time, Deanna talks to Evelyn about how bad her life is going to be in the future, with a deadbeat husband and two sick, difficult children. As Paul continues talking with Karen, he learns that her nurse Joyce -- who was scared of flying, always thinking she would burn to death -- was in seat 13B, and is the charred corpse. Meanwhile, Phil is taken out of his straitjacket, and Alva notices that he is an epileptic. Later, Alva secretly gathers Paul and Evelyn, noting that he thinks each passenger experienced what they thought about at the time of the plane's disappearance, thus consciousness became reality. Alva also thinks Phil's complex statements show that he has somehow figured out how to physically destroy the world. The three realize that they have to stop the government from getting their hands on Phil's theories. Then, Phil begins speaking English again while the other passengers' newfound effects start to wear off, too. Paul wants the government to allow Karen to see her husband while she can still walk, but they refuse. As a result, Paul tries to sneak Karen out of the holding area and is caught. Meanwhile, the charred corpse begins regenerating normal skin, causing the coroners to think the woman could have come back to life if not for the autopsy. Eventually, Karen has become paralyzed yet again, and the other passengers have completely forgotten their experiences. Alva tells Phil that the government will take him somewhere, trying to figure out what he knows. Phil claims that he doesn't know anything, recalling speaking with Deanna while on the flight. As Phil is taken away, Alva yells an Aramaic chant at him, hoping to erase Phil's short-term memory, and his dangerous secrets. Finally, Paul is caught smuggling out a videotape of Karen thanking her husband for all his love and attention to her over the years. However, Evelyn uses a special trick to successfully pass him the footage. Paul presents the tape to Mark and he is able to watch it, finally hearing his wife's tearful message. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
