MYSTERY!: PRIME SUSPECT 3: EPISODE 4 (TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces part four of this four-part program, set in contemporary London, in which recently transferred Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison -- now on the Soho vice squad -- investigates a teenager's murder and discovers a sinister link to the police. As the episode opens, Tennison enters the interview room to question Edward Parker Jones on his relationship with Margaret Speel, as well as his past social work and whether he knows John Kennington, among others. Parker Jones is further questioned on his relationship with prime suspect James Jackson, why he uses aliases, and the two sexual assault charges in his past. Afterward, Otley and Tennison question Jackson on his claim that he lent Connie Jenkins some money before he was murdered, then asking him if he is in cahoots with Parker Jones and has ever tried to extort money from Kennington. Ultimately, Tennison threatens to charge Jackson with attempted murder. The next day, Otley and Tennison examine Jenkins's old room, uncovering some interesting findings. Eventually, Superintendent Halliday and Commander Chiswick call in Tennison and implore her to end her investigation into Parker Jones, Kennington, and the pedophile ring. When threatened, Tennison tells her superiors that she'll fight them if necessary. Later, Tennison again questions Vera Reynolds as to whether Jackson killed Jenkins and whether he knows Kennington. Reynolds also reveals that Jenkins was trying to earn enough money for a sex change and that Jenkins had once been one of Jackson's "boys." Meanwhile, Speel -- revealed to be Parker Jones's fiancŽe -- confronts Parker Jones at his facility over what Tennison told her. Next, Otley and Tennison head to Kennington's house, where they find that he has just committed suicide. Speaking with Mrs. Kennington, Tennison learns more about her husband's past, especially as it relates to Jenkins. Meanwhile, Tennison decides to have an abortion. Once again, Tennison calls Reynolds into the station, angrily questioning him on his whereabouts at the time of Jenkins's murder. Reynolds tearfully reveals seeing Jenkins's meeting with journalist Jessica Smithy -- an event that led to Reynolds hitting Jenkins over the head with an ashtray. Afterward, Reynolds cuts his wrists in the station bathroom. Next, Tennison angrily questions Smithy about the night of Jenkins's murder, wondering why she lied in the past and why she stole some seemingly meaningless photographs from Reynolds. From there, Tennison arrests Parker Jones for involvement in the murder of Jenkins. At the station, she reveals to Parker Jones that his alibis no longer check out. Tennison also informs Parker Jones that she has taped evidence of him calling the ambulance on the night of Jenkins's death. Ultimately, this leads to Tennison revealing the existence of explicit photographs showing Parker Jones with minors -- explaining his motive for setting Reynolds' flat -- and an unconscious Connie -- on fire. Despite the evidence, Tennison has no eyewitness accounts, leaving her without a solid case against Parker Jones. However, she has one final thought on how to bring about justice.
