TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {CAROL BURNETT, BERT CONVY, TOM DREESEN, BARBARA GELB} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include actor/singer Bert Convy, funnywoman Carol Burnett, comedian Tom Dreesen, and author Barbara Gelb. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: how all TV shows seem to give away prizes; the recent spate of great weather in California; Carson and announcer Ed McMahon's suits making them look like tour directors; President Gerald Ford's return from a trip to China; California Governor Jerry Brown's "austere" lifestyle; Vice President Nelson Rockefeller's trip to California; how Burbank is preparing for the upcoming Christmas season; Carson continuing to omit the key word in several jokes; and a new ordinance passed in Charleston, South Carolina, about cleaning up after horses. In the next segment, McMahon and Carson discuss the commercialization of America's bicentennial. They also address the many failures in this year's highly-anticipated television season. Carson reads a list of some mid-season replacements, followed by some shows that "nearly missed" getting on-air. Carson's first guest, Convy, begins by singing "Something About You Baby I Like" before joining Carson to touch on such topics as: his "toy suit"; his game show, "Tattletales"; how his dog acts at Christmastime; how to train dogs; his first professional singing job; and poor advice from a manager early in his career. Carson's second guest, Burnett, joins him to touch on such topics as: a "Gone With the Wind" sketch Carson once did with her on "The Garry Moore Show"; what she wanted to be when she was a little girl; attending UCLA with Convy, and dating him; how fans treat celebrities; an incident that occurred late one night in Manhattan when a mugger approached her; some amusing fan letters she's received; and what type of sketches she most enjoys doing on her show. Next, Dreesen takes the stage to riff on such topics as: the weird custom of a man slapping another's rear end as a form of congratulations; social changes observed as a boy in his neighborhood; the difference between how white and black girls jump rope; being friends with a tough black kid growing up; how Catholic school is good training for prison; why he feared going to confession; and having "impure thoughts" about his high school girlfriend. Finally, Gelb joins Carson to touch on such topics as: how she wanted to be an actress as a youth; doing research for her non-fiction book about homicide detectives; the difference between real detectives and television detectives; accompanying detectives to crime scenes; the ethos of cops; the easiest murders to solve; and the kind of woman that is married to a police officer.

Also, Carson does an in-studio commercial for Jaymar Sansabelt slacks and Vick's Formual 44 cough suppressant, and McMahon does one for Alpo dog food. Includes commercials.
