BROOKLYN BRIDGE: BOYS AND GIRLS TOGETHER (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic series about a middle-class Jewish family living in Brooklyn, New York, in the 1950s.

In this episode, the boys in Alan's class are amused by a sex education film. Benny's inattention to the audiovisual equipment accidentally burns the film. Then, Mr. Cavaretti answers the students' questions about dating. Benny frets that he may never get a date, even as he crushes on Karen Frankel. Unfortunately, Benny is too nervous to ask her out, even with Alan and Warren's prodding.

Meanwhile, Sophie and Phyllis help get pledges for a rummage sale held to honor Harriet Mueller's son Tommy, who died in World War II. That night, Katie calls Alan, revealing that she can't "go steady" with him and thus needs to be escorted to an upcoming party by someone else. Alan comes up with his own plan: having Benny take Katie to the party while he escorts Karen, then swapping partners once at the mixer. Karen is thrilled when Alan asks her to the party, immediately smooching him.

Meanwhile, George and Jules take pictures with the family's Brownie camera, which will be sold at the rummage sale to finance a new Polaroid camera. That night, Benny nervously waits at the Monahan house for Katie, making conversation with her mother. Meanwhile, Alan goes on his faux-date with Karen, who continues to be enamored with him. At the party, Alan explains his conundrum to Warren -- that Karen has been smitten with him since third grade.

Meanwhile, George and Jules try to get the hang of using the Polaroid, with mixed results. Back at the party, during a game of spin the bottle, Katie is forced to kiss Benny. Eventually, Alan struggles to shake Karen so he can dance with Katie, while Katie struggles to do likewise with Benny. Alan privately speaks with Benny, trying to officially make "the switch," but Benny tells him that there's been a change of plan; he is now officially in love with Katie. Commercials deleted.
