ABC PREMIERE EVENT: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS {PART 2
OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Part two in this two-part adaptation of "one of the greatest stories ever told," the biblical tale of Moses' efforts to free the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt and take them to "the Promised Land." This program begins as Menerith holds a spear to Moses after the Red Sea has parted. Menerith eventually drops the weapon and allows Moses to cross the seabed to the other side. Then, the Egyptians army arrives, with Ramses ordering his troops to march through the parted sea toward the Hebrews. However, once all the Hebrews are safely on land, the walls of water merge, drowning and killing the army. The Hebrews subsequently celebrate and collect the fallen Egyptians' weapons as Moses cradles the corpse of Menerith and weeps. Now, Moses isn't quite sure where to lead the Hebrews, saying they will have to wait for God to tell them the location of the Promised Land. Moses encourages the newly freed slaves to feel at home in the desert as he continues leading them on a journey into the unknown. As dissension mounts amongst his men, Moses questions God, wondering why he should have to solve a riddle. Meanwhile, rabble-rousers question Miriam about Moses, wondering why they should all take his word that he truly speaks with God. The next day, the Hebrews finally come upon water in Marah, though it is undrinkable, causing some men to rise up against Moses. Moses plants a tree into the water and it immediately becomes pure. Afterward, the Hebrews find some corpses, with Moses quickly realizing the deaths were caused by the fearsome Amalekites. Moses announces that they will have to fight for every water source in the desert. Jered warns Moses that he doesn't have to fear only the Amalekites, but also some of his fellow Hebrews. Later, the Hebrews find manna in the desert, with Moses revealing that God will provide for them every single day so long as they all believe. Meanwhile, more Hebrews are being slain by Amalekites, making Moses realize that they must learn to fight. The Hebrews begin training with weapons and hand-to-hand combat. The exception is a man named Joshua, who thinks that fighting shows a lack of faith in God. Moses convinces Joshua that he is acting like a slave and that it is not an insult to God if they learn to protect themselves. Soon, Moses thinks that Joshua may have the makings of a warrior and chooses him to be the Hebrew leader in battle. Moses tells his Hebrews that God is testing them and that they will have to actually win the day's battle, rather than count on miracles. Then, the confrontation between the Amalekites and Hebrews begins, with Moses's people ending up bloodied but victorious. Moses later asks God if they have "passed the test," wondering how many more tests they will have to face. As others are celebrating, Jered -- whose wife was saved from rape after Moses killed her attacker back in Egypt -- begins an affair with the also-married Leah. One day, a caravan lead by Jethro reaches the Hebrews, bringing Zipporah with him. Moses speaks to Jethro, who is impressed by his defeat of the Amalekites and how God speaks to him. Moses tells Jethro that, before he leads the Hebrews to the Promised Land, he believes God wants him to find something in the desert. Jethro tells Moses to trust no one. Later, Moses approaches Zipporah, wondering how she has been since he sent her away. Then, Moses sees his young sons. First-born Gershom says he will kill Moses -- not knowing that he's his father -- if he makes his mother cry. Then, Jethro and Zipporah depart from Moses, with Zipporah wondering why God is punishing him. Moses rails at God, claiming he doesn't want to be "the chosen one." He asks God for a sign before he learns that the well has run dry and it is time to move on. Later, Moses is forced to act as a judge in disputes amongst the Hebrews. Meanwhile, Jered and Leah are seen kissing by Leah's husband. Acting on impulse, Jered kills him and the pair hide the body. Meanwhile, Moses recalls being raised as an Egyptian prince while coming upon an Egyptian outpost, bringing him a revelation about the Hebrews' one true god. Later, the body of Leah's husband is found and a suspect is apprehended. When Moses won't sanction the man's death since nothing has been proven, Jered speaks up as a witness against him. However, Moses suspects the truth, getting Leah to tell him what really happened. Moses then chastises Jered, recalling once again the incident of attempted rape in Egypt, and how it has now led to an innocent man's murder. Moses sentences the pair to death by stoning, later throwing the first rock. Afterward, Moses cries to God and finally hears from him. God instructs Moses to come to him, finding the answers he has sought for so long. Moses tells the Hebrews of his plans, appointing Aaron as the first priest, before disappearing into a mist. During Moses' absence, some of the Hebrews stage an uprising, stating that Moses has been acting like a pharaoh. Miriam and Aaron discuss how their brother treats them like slaves. Miriam encourages Aaron to take control. Aaron is then convinced to oversee the building of a golden calf for the Hebrews to worship. Meanwhile, Moses has climbed Mount Sinai, observing as two tablets are inscribed before him bearing ten commandments. Then, Moses returns with the tablets, disgusted to see the false idol. Moses slams the tablets at its base, yelling at Aaron for disobeying God. Moses destroys the golden calf and divisions form in the camp. Moses encourages the Hebrews that stand with God to join him. Aaron and Miriam stand with Moses before both factions begin an ugly battle. Quickly, Moses's side has won and Moses tells Aaron that it is God's will that all the deserters die. Afterward, God speaks to Moses, telling him to take his people and go, having broken their word. Moses makes his people renew their promise to God. God then asks Moses to climb Mount Sinai once again. The next morning, Moses returns with two tablets, the Ten Commandments, which are subsequently stored in the Ark of the Covenant. Afterward, the Hebrews begin their journey to the Promised Land, walking in the desert for forty years until they could finally become a people. Finally, Moses is denied entrance to "the land of milk and honey" by God, but is allowed to see it from a cliff before he dies. Includes commercials.
