ANDERSON COOPER 360: AFGHANISTAN: THE UNFINISHED WAR (TV)

Summary

Anderson Cooper hosts this in-depth look at national news stories and related features. This edition examines the war in Afghanistan still raging some five years after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as al Qaeda fighters, Taliban militants, and common criminals continue threatening U.S. forces. First, in a taped segment, CNN senior international correspondent Nic Robertson investigates why the hunt for Osama bin Laden has taken so long as he journeys through Pakistan and into Afghanistan, speaking with people from the region who explain why it has been so easy for the infamous terrorist to evade capture. Next, Cooper examines the last known Afghan location of bin Laden, the town of Jalalabad. Cooper takes the six-hour journey -- with the assistance of a half-dozen SUVs filled with armed guards -- to the town where the remains of bin Laden's giant, two-acre compound stand. Cooper explores the compound, climbing down into what appears to be a well-shaped weapons storage facility. Then, Peter Bergen, CNN terrorism analyst, explains why it would be a "dumb idea" to go on and explore Tora Bora, as a single road leads into the cave complex and terrorists reportedly ambush travelers. Then, Cooper speaks with Bergen and Robertson about whether people are actually, physically hunting for bin Laden. Next, in footage taped earlier, Cooper goes on patrol with soldiers from the Bravo Company, Third Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, in attempt to find launch sites used by military fighters. Cooper speaks with Captain Jason Dye who details the dangerous situation in Afghanistan for U.S. soldiers like himself. Then, "Breaking News" interrupts the program as Jonathan Freed reports live from Union, Missouri, on the return of missing "Baby Abby" to her family as the baby's abductor, Shannon Beck, has been placed under arrest. Next, Cooper examines a new tape that has been released by al Qaeda that purports to show a suicide attack by a foreign fighter -- Abu Muhammad -- against U.S. forces. After showing the tape, Cooper discusses whether the tape is real or simply propaganda. Then, in footage taped earlier, Robertson investigates madrassas, Pakistan's religious school system, and tries to determine whether these schools are training a new generation of terrorists. Robertson speaks with a madrassa leader, Mullah Abdul Rashid Gahzi, who discusses why he continues to teach jihad. Next, Robertson further examines the remnants of a U.S.-built school in Afghanistan which was targeted by Taliban militants, speaking with locals and examining the counterinsurgency techniques going on in the region. Next, Robertson reports on the court case of an Afghan man who wanted to convert to Christianity and was ultimately declared insane. Cooper subsequently discusses how many people wish the Taliban would regain power in Afghanistan to insure that Islamic values remain. Then, Cooper examines the current battle over "virtue" and "vice" in Afghanistan, with footage taped earlier documenting Chinese prostitutes at a brothel in Kabul, and the sale in the marketplace of music, Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, perfume, and American wrestling tapes-- once outlawed by the Taliban. Cooper details how many Afghans are uncomfortable with this social change and how freedoms are being threatened by a new Taliban resurgence. Then, in footage taped earlier, Robertson visits eastern Afghanistan and Quetta, a major Pakistani city near the border, to examine the tribal areas which act as breeding grounds for the Taliban. Finally, in "A Reporter's Notebook," Cooper narrates as photographs from Getty Images cameraman Brent Sturton provide some behind-the-scenes looks at his time in Afghanistan to deliver an "accurate" picture of the region. Includes commercials.
