ROOTS: ONE YEAR LATER (TV)

Summary

A special program documenting the impact of the immensely popular "Roots" series based on the book by Alex Haley. Includes a 1977 look at President Jimmy Carter, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Andrew Young, as Carter talks with Haley. The program traces Haley's visit to Gambia to research his family, and looks at the screen test of LeVar Burton, a U.S.C. sophomore who played Kunta Kinte. Cast members Georg Stanford Brown, Lloyd Bridges, and Edward Asner discuss their filming experience and Haley is seen with Johnny Carson on the "Tonight" show and with Elizabeth Taylor, Coretta King, and George McGovern. Scenes from "Roots" are shown, as is the reunion of the descendants of slaves and slaveowners. Includes commercials.
