60 MINUTES {THE SELLING OF COLONEL HERBERT; COME TO BRITAIN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. Mike Wallace opens with news that the first U.S. prisoners of war will be returned from Hanoi during the week. In "The Selling of Colonel Herbert," Wallace reports on Lt. Col. Anthony Herbert, who was dismissed for reporting war crimes to the U.S. Army. Wallace's report includes footage from Herbert's 1971 appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show," during which Herbert describes five killings he witnessed in 1969 and subsequently reported. Wallace interviews Herbert as well as army officers Col. Ross Franklin and Col. John Douglass, both of whom dispute Herbert's charges. In "Come to Britain," Safer takes a light look at resort centers in Britain with highly organized leisure activities for adults. In "Point-Counterpoint," James J. Kilpatrick and Nicholas Von Hoffman debate President Richard Nixon's budget and whether increases in defense spending are at the expense of programs for the poor. Safer closes with audience mail. Includes commercials.
