Summary

The first episode of this special series tracing the history of one black family through the generations. In this episode, beginning in April 1882, the following events occur: James Warner, son of an influential white colonel, becomes fond of a black woman, and black and white politicians debate the possible disenfranchisement of black voters. Other highlights include the following: the death of Chicken George Moore, an ex-slave and ancestor of author Alex Haley; the secret marriage of Warner and the black teacher Carrie; and the repudiation of Warner by his father the colonel. Includes commercials.
