Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. The program begins with Mike Wallace offering "The $4 Billion Lunch," a segment about the school lunch program. Wallace examines the waste of food in schools, government subsidies for lunch programs, pioneer projects in Las Vegas and Milwaukee, and the varying quality of food. In "The Music of Auschwitz," Morley Safer profiles Fania Fenelon, the author of "Playing for Time," who was once a cabaret singer in Paris. Fenelon recalls being imprisoned at Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp where she sang to stay alive. This profile includes film of the Auschwitz orchestra composed of prisoners. Also, Fenelon and Safer visit Auschwitz, where Fenelon recalls her imprisonment and liberation. In "Boss of the Big Apple," Dan Rather reports on New York City Mayor Edward I. Koch. Rather interviews Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.), New York Labor leader Victor Gotbaum, political writer Jack Newfield, and Koch himself about the mayor's personal style and New York City's financial crisis. In "Point-Counterpoint," Shana Alexander and James J. Kilpatrick debate the issue of women sportswriters in men's locker rooms. Safer concludes the program by reading audience mail against a skyline backdrop. Includes commercials.
