60 MINUTES {LOOKING OUT FOR MRS. BERWID; STRIKE TWO!; ONE OF HITLER'S FAVORITES} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. In this edition, Morley Safer reports on the murder of Eva Berwid by her estranged husband; Harry Reasoner reports on the possibility of another players' strike in major-league baseball; and Dan Rather reports on the life and times of German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. In the first segment, "Looking Out For Mrs. Berwid," Safer investigates the deterioration of the relationship between Adam and Eva Berwid; his many threats and attacks on her after their separation, often from prison; the apparent complicity of the corrections system in Adam's murder of Eva; and the legal ruling against Adam during his murder trial. Next, in "Strike Two!" Reasoner reports on the looming threat of a baseball players' strike. He interviews a number of concerned individuals, including Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Dave Parker, players' union head Marvin Miller, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Tom Seaver, Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese, Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Willie "Pops" Stargell, New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson, and Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt. Next, in the segment, "One of HitlerÕs Favorites," Rather begins by focusing on filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl's notorious documentary about the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. In the midst of an examination of the making and reception of the film, Riefenstahl discusses her refusal to edit the footage of Jesse Owens' winning of gold medals despite HitlerÕs obvious annoyance with the athlete's tremendous performance. She goes on to express her frustration about not making films anymore and to explain what she would like people to recognize about her through her films and photographs. The program concludes with correspondent Andy Rooney's analysis of the unique relationship between dogs and people. Includes commercials and a promo. Commercials include Orson Welles for Paul Masson wines.
