FOUR DARK DAYS, THE: FROM DALLAS TO ARLINGTON {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Part one of two. This news special reconstructs the events of President John F. Kennedy's assassination and funeral, from Friday, November 22 through Monday, November 25, 1963. As this part begins, Charles Collingwood discusses President Kennedy's itinerary, and Dan Rather talks about the president's speech in Fort Worth on Friday, a filmed portion of which is shown. Footage is shown of President Kennedy's arrival in Dallas, the presidential motorcade driving through downtown Dallas, and the shooting of the president. Eddie Barker reports on the reaction of the guests who had been awaiting President Kennedy's scheduled appearance at a luncheon at the Dallas Trade Mart.

Included is footage from the newscast in which Walter Cronkite announces (at approximately 2:38pm Eastern time), "From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official, 'President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time'".

Coverage continues with the capture of Kennedy's alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald; the reaction of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and various aides; and the arrival of Pres. Kennedy's casket in Washington, accompanied by Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and PresIdent Lyndon B. Johnson. World leaders and average citizens offer comments and reactions, and a recap of the events of Sunday, November 24, includes the murder of Oswald by Jack Ruby during a live broadcast, and the procession of the funeral cortege from the White House to the Capitol, where the body of the late president will lie in state. As this part concludes, the casket is carried to the rotunda, with Mrs. Kennedy and her children following. Included throughout are extensive clips of President Kennedy; Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and her children, Caroline and John Jr.; President Kennedy's brothers, Edward and Robert; his mother, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy; and Oswald, Ruby, President Johnson, former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Harry S. Truman, Dean Rusk, former Vice President Richard Nixon, and Sen. Barry Goldwater. Continues with T84:0163.
