DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE {BOB HOPE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs,
hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews with
newsmakers and people in the political and cultural
forefront. On this edition, the sole guest is veteran
entertainer Bob Hope, who talks to Cavett about his life
and career. The host opens the program by answering
questions posed by the studio audience. Following this,
he introduces Hope, who talks about the following
topics, among others: his extensive travel schedule and
his love of "hamming it up"; his work on the Broadway
stage, including the musical "Roberta," and "The
Ziegfeld Follies" with Fanny Brice; the accident that
resulted in the shape of his signature nose; his
childhood in Cleveland; changing censorship standards in
the entertainment industry; and actor Fred MacMurray's
transition from Broadway actor to Hollywood film star.
A series of clips are shown from Hope's upcoming movie
"Cancel My Reservation," after which he discusses his
former careers as a dance instructor and boxer, the way
in which he learned to "act with his eyes," his first
meeting with Bing Crosby, travel mishaps and
near-accidents, his upcoming television special with
Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz, his early vaudeville acts
and his reasons for deciding not to change his name, the
exaggerated reports of his wealth, his experiences
playing golf with various U.S. Presidents, and the
dangers he encountered while entertaining troops
overseas. Includes commercials, promos, and public
service announcements. Commercials include Jonathan
Winters for Hefty trash bags and Jaclyn Smith for
Natural Wonder mascara and Supp-Hose pantyhose, and
public service announcements include Bing and Kathy
Crosby for the Arthritis Foundation and Johnny Cash for
the United Way.
