DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE {FRED ASTAIRE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk shows, hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews with newsmakers and people in the political and cultural forefront. Cavett's guest on this program is legendary film star and song-and-dance man Fred Astaire, who discusses the following topics, among others: his Nebraskan origins; his inadvertant enrollment in a dancing class as a young child; his dance training in New York; his professional dancing career with his sister Adele, which began in childhood and ended with her marriage; the amount of rehearsal necessary for the complex dance sequences in his films; the failure of a group of cats to cooperate during a complicated routine; the contributions of composers George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin to his work; his reputation for being nice; his lack of confidence as a singer; his affection for his former dance partners Ginger Rogers and Barrie Chase; his recent television movie, "The Over the Hill Gang Rides Again"; why he doesn't dance ballet; his elderly, spirited mother; his admiration for all dancers; incidents of personal clumsiness while dancing; and his interest in police work, which inspired him to ride along with police officers in prowl cars for a time.
In the course of the program, Astaire sings selections by composers George Gershwin ("They All Laughed," "Lady Be Good," "'S Wonderful," "A Foggy Day"), Irving Berlin ("Cheek to Cheek"; “Isn’t This A Lovely Day (To Be Caught In The Rain)?"; "Change Partners"; "Top Hat, White Tie And Tails"), and Cole Porter ("Miss Otis Regrets" and "Night and Day").
Cavett shows clips of Astaire's famous routines from the movies "Blue Skies," "Let's Dance," and "Holiday Inn," and Astaire is persuaded to perform some impromptu steps in the studio. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. Commercials include F. Murray Abraham for Bon Ami; public service announcements include Barbra Streisand for the National Association for Retarded Children.
(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title, "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the series aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment."
