LEONARD BERNSTEIN AT HARVARD: THE NORTON LECTURES, NO. 3: MUSICAL SEMANTICS (TV)
Summary
This is part one of the third of six lectures delivered by Leonard Bernstein as the Charles Norton Scholar at Harvard University in 1973 and produced for television by WGBH in Boston. Bernstein names his lectures about music theory "The Unanswered Question." This third lecture addresses the issue of musical semantics. Bernstein reviews highlights of lectures one and two; defines and elaborates on the idea of a musical metaphor; explains the difference between musical meanings and those of other art forms; and provides a parallel ladder chart illustrating the difference between music and language. He plays a piano sonata by Mozart as an example of a figure of musical speech, and then explores the issue of repetition in substantiating a musical metaphor. No commercials. Continues with T85:0626.
