JEWEL IN THE CROWN, THE, EPISODE 10: AN EVENING AT THE MAHARANEES (TV)

Summary

Part ten of this epic fourteen-part drama which chronicles the final turbulent years of English rule in India from 1942-1947. Based on author Paul Scott's "The Raj Quartet," this mini-series concentrates on the intricate personal relationships of British and Indian characters against the backdrop of India's struggle to assert its sovereignty from the declining British Empire. In the tenth episode, "An Evening at the Maharanees," which takes place entirely in Bombay in 1945, Sarah is reunited with her father, Colonel Layton, after several years of separation while he was a prisoner of war. Sarah attends a party with Ronald Merrick where she encounters Count Bronowsky, Ahmed, and Guy Perron, a young British intelligence officer who was educated at Chillingborough with Hari Kumar and was recently an uncomfortable witness to Merrick's interrogation of an Indian suspected of collaborating with the INA in Germany.

Although Captain Purvis has sent Perron incognito to the party to search for security leaks, the gathering ends abruptly, before any wrongdoing can be uncovered, and Perron returns to Purvis's quarters to discover that the Captain has attempted suicide. Acting quickly, Perron is able to save Purvis's life and spends the afterglow of the tumultuous evening becoming acquainted with Sarah and also spending time with Colonel Layton, who is worse for wear following his time in prison. Also present is Merrick, who has previously commanded Perron to avoid discussing Hari Kumar or the interrogated Indian, who is a former member of Colonel Layton's regiment. Although Merrick wishes to have Perron attached to his department, Perron hopes to avoid serving under Merrick, who officiously treats the sergeant with jealousy and suspicion.

(This series also aired on PBS under the umbrella of "Mobil Masterpiece Theatre" from December 16, 1984 through March 17, 1985.)
