Summary
One in this nineteen-part documentary series that explores the major events and personalities that have shaped twentieth-century America. Host Bill Moyers imparts a personal journalistic vision to the programs, which emphasize the political, social, and military history of the United States. In this episode, Moyers examines the use of propaganda during World War Two. He profiles German propaganda filmmaker Fritz Hippler and America's answer to him, filmmaker Frank Capra. First, Moyers interviews Hippler, who discusses the following topics: the purpose of propaganda; the rules for making effective propaganda; and what he thought his film "The Eternal Jew" would accomplish. Next, Moyers talks with Capra, who discusses the following topics: how he became involved in making newsreels; the idea behind his series of seven short films entitled "Why We Fight"; how he used the Germans' own footage to create effective films; and why he felt it was important that the German films be shown. Also included are clips from the following films: Eva Braun's home movies of Adolf Hitler and members of the Nazi party; the German propaganda films "Campaign in Poland" and "The Eternal Jew"; a spoof of Hitler and his army made in Britain entitled "The Lambeth Walk"; and Frank Capra's "Why We Fight: Prelude to War."
