OPERA ON FOUR: LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN {HELENE
DELAVAULT}, PT. 1 (TV)

Summary

Part one of two. One in this series dedicated to opera. Adapted by Peter Brook from Bizet's original opera, this TV version is the first in a special three-part presentation by the acclaimed Paris Opera that features the same production but with three different casts. Sung in French with English subtitles, Helene Delavault is featured in the title role. In this part, Micaela (Host), arrives in Seville in search of Don Jose (Hensel), a corporal. While declaring her love, she is interrupted by Carmen, who makes lewd advances toward Don Jose. The two women brawl and Carmen draws a knife, scarring Micaela's face. Lieutenant Zuniga (Denizon) arrives and orders Don Jose to arrest Carmen. When Don Jose permits her to escape, the irate Zuniga demotes him. The scene shifts to the tavern of Lillas Pastia (Maratrat) several days later. Zuniga and Don Jose, both in pursuit of the lusty Carmen, come to blows and Zuniga is killed. A suave bullfighter, Escamillo (Gardner), arrives. While Don Jose disposes of Zuniga's body, Escamillo charms the fickle Carmen. When the jealous Don Jose returns, he pulls a knife on Escamillo, who deftly disarms him and then departs after inviting Carmen to his upcoming bullfight. Alone, Don Jose reflects on his passion for Carmen. Overhearing his lament, she is moved and takes him to her gypsy camp where they are wed. Before morning Garcia (Sudana), Carmen's former lover, returns. The two men fight while Carmen foresees her death in the tarot cards. Continues with T88:0219.
