AN AMERICAN FAMILY {PART 6 OF 12} (TV)

Summary

Part six of this twelve-part documentary in which the events in the everyday lives of Bill and Pat Loud and their five children, an actual family from Santa Barbara, California, are captured on film over a seven-month period, from May 30, 1971 to January 1, 1972. In this installment, Delilah Loud watches her boyfriend, Brad, repair his boat. Pat, who has just returned from her three-week vacation in Taos, New Mexico, has lunch in a restaurant with Bill, where they discuss the mismanaged bookkeeping at his company, his mounting money problems due to dock strikes, and their differing attitudes toward their children. At home, Pat and Michele read newspapers in the living room in an uncomfortable silence and argue about letting their dogs into the house. Later, a dangerous brush fire reaches within fifty yards of the Loud home. The next day, Kevin speaks to Bill and Pat on the telephone from Indonesia and discusses the success of his trip. Additionally, Lance Loud and his friend Christian, who are vacationing in Paris, meet some unusual people at an outdoor cafe, and Lance calls home to Santa Barbara to ask for money. This installment concludes with Lance and Christian eating lunch on their terrace, discussing their money problems.
