AN AMERICAN FAMILY {PART 11 OF 12} (TV)
Summary
Part eleven of this twelve-part documentary in which the events in the everyday lives of Bill and Pat Loud and their five children, an actual family from Santa Barbara, California, are captured on film over a seven-month period, from May 30, 1971 to January 1, 1972. In this installment, Lance Loud returns home to Santa Barbara after an eight-month stay in New York and Europe. As the program begins, Lance goes to see a New York screening of a film called "Desperate Characters." Next, Lance goes on a flight to Santa Barbara, where he arrives at the airport in an extravagant outfit; family members Pat, Michele, Delilah, and Kevin greet him at the airport. At the Loud home, Lance, Delilah, Pat, and Michele try on clothes and talk; Grant and Lance listen to records; and the family celebrates Pat's forty-fifth birthday. Additionally, Lance rides his bicycle to Bill's office, accompanied by a voice-over of Bill reciting a letter he had previously written to Lance; the letter primarily concerns Bill's feelings about his divorce from Pat. While waiting for Bill to arrive at this office, Lance reads aloud from a letter he had previously written to his father. When Bill arrives, he and Lance discuss various family matters and Lance's plans for the future.
